Meetings and Special Events 2018—2019

An Cala Garden. Isle of Seil, Argyll, Scotland

Meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Carrier Room, 600 State Street, Salem, Oregon. All are invited to pre-meeting dinner at 5:00 p.m. at the Ram Restaurant and Brewery, 515  12th Street, Salem.

September 12: Meeting. Ali Sarlak. My Trip to Germany. Ali is an ARS Willamette Chapter member who will present a program about his experiences in spring 2018 at the American Rhododendron Society conference in Bremen, Germany.

October 10: Meeting. Wes Butler. Landscape Design and Construction. Mr. Butler is part of Riverdale Landscape Construction and will discuss practical landscape design and construction, landscape management, how to avoid construction pitfalls and how to hire an installer.

November 14: Meeting. Dana Malby. New Zealand Trip. Dana is an ARS Willamette Chapter member who will talk about the beautiful gardens he visited while attending the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rhododendron Society in 2017.

December 2: Holiday potluck at the home of Kathy and Wally Reed.

January 9: Meeting. Jack Olson.  From Seedling to Ecstasy. Jack, an ARS Eugene Chapter member, will get us excited about hybridizing rhododendrons. He has years of experience growing rhododendrons with fabulous blooms.

February 13: Meeting. Steve Hootman, Executive Director and Curator of the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden in Federal Way, Washington, will speak about his most interesting plant hunting expeditions.

March 13: Meeting. Ella May Wulff. Heathers for Year ‘Round ColorMs. Wulff is the co-author of Gardening with Hardy Heathers, the definitive book on all aspects of heaths and heathers.

March 30: Exploring Gardens from St. Paul to Portland. Join other Willamette Chapter members for a fun day visiting the Cecil and Molly Smith Garden, Bishop’s Close, and Crystal Springs Garden. Click for the planning information for the excursion.

April 10: Meeting. Dick Cavender. Control of Moles and Gophers. Dick is an ARS Willamette Chapter member and expert propagator of R. occidentale, other rhododendrons, pleione (a hardy miniature orchid), and other horticultural wonders.

April 12, 10:00 a.m.—7:00 p.m.;  April 13, 10:00 a.m.—3:00 p.m. Willamette Chapter ARS Truss Show and Plant Sale. Bush’s Pasture Park at the Mission St. SE entrance, Salem. The Truss Show will be in conjunction with the Bush Park Benefit Plant Sale presented by Mission Street Parks Conservancy. In addition to beautiful rhodies in bloom, there will be unusual rhodies for sale along with a wide range of other Spring plants.

May 8: Potluck and Rhododendron Auction. Location to be announced.
